songs about grief

Even Jesus Felt Grief

When Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, was beheaded, his disciples buried the body while Jesus left the city to be alone to grieve. A multitude of people followed him into the wilderness, begging to be healed. Jesus could have sent them away, stating that he was grieving, but he remained compassionate. He spoke with them, then proceeded to perform one of his many miracles: feeding the 5,000. Only after he fed them did he send them away so he could continue grieving and praying.

Looking to Jesus as our perfect example in all things, we see that even He, the One who would understand best about the hope of the next life and things to come, mourned the loss of his beloved cousin.

Following His Example

When we experience loss, the feelings are overwhelming. It can be hard to process. Sometimes we may feel that we want to push away our grief. We don’t have time to grieve, we may tell ourselves. We have too much to do, too much going on, or we just don’t want to accept that feeling of grief because it makes the situation too real. But we can’t push it off. We can’t pretend it’s not there. Looking to Christ, we know that we must mourn and allow ourselves time to grieve, as He did.

Using Christ as our example in grief, we also see that we must keep living. We can grieve, feel the sadness and loss, but we can’t stop participating in the world. He still continued his ministry in the midst of His loss. He performed miracles. He taught and loved. We too can help others as they grieve. We must keep moving forward.

Be of Good Cheer

As His disciples mourned His death, Christ appeared unto them and told them to “be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” It may not be easy to “be of good cheer” right away, or even a year later, but by going through the process, by seeking help, by allowing yourself to mourn, you can eventually reach that point. Grief will never go away, but it doesn’t have to replace the good things in life.

Being of good cheer doesn’t require us to smile and be happy despite the pain and struggle. Being of good cheer means being courageous, having faith despite the heartache.

Job lost everything, yet he did not let his loss take away his faith. He was courageous in the face of adversity and understood that pain is a part of this mortal experience. Christ is there for us. He took on our grief as well as our sin and he can succor us as we mourn and grieve. He is our firm foundation and we can remain strong through our pain.

Songs About Grief Can Help

Drink Deep

Weep if you want to

You don’t have to put a brave face on for me

Rage if you’re angry

This is not the time to keep things nice and neat

Though it seems today like you could never heal

There’s no way to escape the things you feel

so

Drink deep of the sorrow

Drink deep of the pain

Don’t let anybody tell you

to get out of the rain

This is your cup

and you’re the one who has to drink

Though the taste may go down bitterly

Drink deep
