Stories

Dear Friend - As ones eager to be good stewards of the vision that God has given, we at Music for the Soul prayerfully seek God’s call and leading every step of the way.

Living in the rigors and demands of the day to day it is often difficult to see God’s hand at work. That’s why it is so important to reflect on the journey from time to time; to remember what God has done. For it is through the stories of a ministry like Music for the Soul that one can see God’s faithfulness in weaving together something more beautiful and surprising than could ever be imagined. I hope you’ll enjoy reading some of these stories and seeing the miraculous way God has inspired us, encouraged us, and sustained us.

Additionally, we have been blessed with many wonderfully thoughtful, creative, wise, and passionate friends. From time to time to they have shared their thoughts with us on a wide range of subjects having to do with music and ministry. Some of these are archived here as well. We welcome your thoughts and comments on what you read here. And we pray that you will derive joy in sharing with others – whether through song, poetry, essay, film, art, or the spoken word - the stories of the miracles that God has done in your life!

A Prayer Miracle 2005 - Somebody's Daughter

One morning in June of 2005 Meredith and I were sitting and having coffee in the den. I expressed to her that I was frustrated to find myself in the position of not being able to reach any of the leadership in Christian media to help create awareness for Music for the Soul, especially with regard to pornography and Somebody's Daughter.

I'd spent eleven years depending on Christian radio to make my living as a songwriter. Frankly, it was an irritating irony that after having spent four years and all this energy to create a not-for-profit Christian ministry organization I was now again in the position of depending on Christian radio for the spreading of our message.

"How am I going to get the leadership at Christian radio to listen to me on this issue?" I asked her rhetorically. It seemed a very hit and miss proposition at best.

That afternoon Douglas Shaw, owner of Douglas Shaw & Associates – a premiere fundraising consulting organization, came to my office for the first time. He was down in Nashville to make a presentation to the Nashville Union Rescue Mission and stopped by so we could catch up.

I was sharing with him some of the response we had received to Somebody's Daughter and how frustrated I was at not being able to get the big Christian organizations – especially the media - to pay attention.

"I have twenty minutes to speak at a dinner for the National Religious Broadcasters Innovation Exchange. It's a gathering of the CEOs and leaders of major Christian media. If I gave you ten minutes would you take it?" he asked.

I could hardly believe my ears. I knew this was an opportunity that Doug had been aiming toward and working up to for a long time. I also knew that he'd paid $20,000 for the opportunity. I was humbled and a little staggered. This was less than four hours since I had been lamenting to my wife that I had no way to get an audience with these guys!

I felt like badly about taking valuable minutes away from Doug's presentation time. But with the graciousness that seems to flow without effort from him he assured me that my presenting would reflect well on him and his organization. And so, with some trepidation I accepted.

Not only was Doug giving me half of his presentation time, he was also paying for my flights to and from Dallas and my hotel. I felt a tremendous responsibility to reflect well on Doug and his organization. (I even wound up buying my first real suit for the occasion!}
