Somebody's Daughter

"An amazing gift of music that reaches deep into the soul of men struggling with pornography."
-Bob Wood Pastor of Celebrate Recovery at Central Christian Church and Celebrate Recovery National Assimilation Coach

"I am writing to express how profoundly important your "Somebody's Daughter" CD is for men in the church. Pornography is ravaging the power of Christianity before our very eyes. This CD personalizes the destructive power of pornography like nothing I have ever heard or seen."
- Larry Malone, Director United Methodist Men's Ministries
Nashville, TN

"You can tell God's hand is all over this thing. This is the most powerful music I have ever heard. I've worn my CD out! Nothing has moved me as deeply as this project."
- Rick White, Senior Pastor, The People's Church, Franklin, TN

"Finally, someone has put sexual recovery to music! This CD has 18 tracks that are absolutely amazing. This well produced music recovery CD is absolutely beneficial in the recovery process of sexual addiction. Every addict and partner of a sex addict will be amazed at how much insight and healing "Somebody's Daughter" has for their recovery."
- Dr. Doug Weiss, Heart2Heart Counseling Center, Colorado Springs, Colo.

"The personal testimonies given on the CD lower the barrier for men who are having a hard time overcoming the shame and guilt of pornography. Hearing that other men have experienced the same feelings makes it easier for them to be honest about what's going on in their lives."
- Dave Begueire, Man2Man Express, Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts

"We just finished listening to "Somebody's Daughter" and know that it will touch the hearts of many we come in contact with. Thank you for this great ministry tool."
- Pastor Larry & Lorrie Russell, Shepherds' Heart Ministry
Parker, CO

"You knocked it out of the park! I cried through half of it. It's powerful - very, very powerful. Everything is so well done. I believe this will bring people to Christ. It's so, so rich with resources. Thank you for taking the risk of doing this."
- Michael Cusick, Restoring the Soul
Lakewood, Colorado

"Terrific CD. Lets get one in the hands and hearts of every man in America. Just fabulous!!!"
- Dr. Chuck Stecker, President - A Chosen Generation, Littleton, Colo.

"I've listened to Somebody's Daughter and have never heard a CD that got my attention the way this one does. The combination of testimonies and songs really impacted me."
- Tony Jesse, Pastor of Care and Recovery, Long Hollow Baptist Church

Late one night seven years ago my phone rang. It was a co-writer friend of mine - somebody who wrote for Point of Grace, Avalon, 4 Him. He was calling because he was at the end of his rope and he didn't know where else to turn. He was calling to tell me he was a pornography addict. It was a courageous call. However, you can imagine how startled I was when a few weeks later a Christian recording artist made that same confession to me. As I started speaking with others in the industry, it wasn't long before I discovered I knew seven Christian writers or artists who were battling pornography. So I started doing some research.

Let me tell you what I learned. Pornography kills. It kills marriages, it kills families, it kills ministries, it kills careers. It destroys a man's ability to be intimate with his spouse. It destroys a man's ability to be intimate with God.

However bad you think it is...it's worse.

Recently I heard of a Christian man who lost everything - his wife, his family, his business - Child pornography was found on his computer. He's now in prison. I wish that were the first time I'd ever heard a story like that.

An overwhelming majority of men answering a Promise Keepers survey said that pornography was their #1 problem. The guys I've spoken with at Promise Keepers tell me they estimate that 60% of men in our churches are struggling with pornography.

One Christian therapist who specializes in this field calls it "the Christian addiction of choice." One man I know who works in Christian radio admitted to me that he had struggled with pornography. He calls it "A cancer on Christendom." According to a Focus on the Family survey of pastors, 37% of them admit to battling with pornography.

But worst of all is what it's doing to our children. The average age of first exposure to pornography in our country is now down to six. How are our kids supposed to develop healthy ideas about intimacy?

Most of the men I talk to remember seeing it first as small children - finding a Playboy in dad's closet or at a friend's house. But since pornography addiction is progressive, what started there didn't end there. As the years go by it takes harder and harder material to achieve the same result.

As I'm sure you've noticed, there has been an incremental slide in our standards as a culture. Advertisers in magazines, on commercial television, and even at the local mall are resorting to more and more sexually charged material. The kind of movies that used to be rated R are now PG 13. One missionary just back from Africa told me she was appalled at the amount of degradation she noticed in this area after being away for only two years.

But hey, this stuff has become main stream. All kinds of companies profit from it.

And advertisers are shamelessly targeting our kids. Sports Illustrated did trading cards of their swimsuit models this year. Those weren't for thirty year olds.

The youth pastor who got the idea for XXXChurch.com did so because almost all of the boys he was mentoring confessed to struggling with this problem.

The behavior kids see in movies, videos, and advertising does have an affect on their behavior. Sam Mehaffie of Saving Our Boys related a conversation he had with a young Christian teen. He told Sam "My girlfriend is saving herself for marriage. Then later on in the conversation the teen told Sam that she was giving him oral sex. Our culture has taught these teens the lie that this is appropriate pre-martial behavior.

Pornography used to be just a guy problem. Not anymore. 35% of women are struggling with it now - their shame even greater because the perception is that it's supposed to be a guy problem. Our elderly are struggling with it as well. This thing is out of control. And it's growing because pornographers are on the offensive. Pornography made 13 billion dollars in the US last year, more than the NFL, NBA, and major league baseball combined.

So why am I telling you this? Because we, the church, need to go on the offensive.

After I spoke recently on Moody Network we received several calls at our office from people who said they had confessed this problem to their church and been ostracized, shunned by their own church family.

When The People's Church in Franklin, TN hosted something called Porn Sunday they did three Sunday services dealing honestly with pornography. At the close of each service, Pastor Rick White said "We have not done enough on this issue. But I don't want you to struggle alone any longer. I promise if you confess this problem to one of our pastoral staff you will be met with grace, not condemnation."

As the church we need to be willing to confront the lies and the darkness of pornography with the light of truth that is found in Jesus Christ. Because where that light shines, evil has no power. As it says in 1; John 1:7 "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Christ Jesus, His son, purifies us from all sin."

We must lead with forgiveness, not judgment. We must have the courage to be relevant. Only then can people be real about what's going on in their lives. Only then can the church get people the help they really need to overcome pornography, as well as other abuses and addictions, and experience the freedom that is only found in Christ.

This CD was created over the last seven years with the input of a dozen Christian men who have won their battle with pornography. It includes music, poetry, scripture, interviews, and personal testimony, not only from the man's point of view but from the spouse's point of view as well.

But this is not just a CD for people who are trapped in pornography. It is a record for any man who wants to honor God with the way he lives his life; who wants to live by the biblical standard of Ephesians 5:3 - "among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality." To live that standard in today's culture a man has got to start his day with a plan.

Music has the power to communicate messages in a way that sticks. I believe it should be our goal for every Christian man in America to think every time he looks at a woman - she is a creation of the Holy God to be cherished and honored. She is someone Christ died for. She is Somebody's Daughter. The song is a good non confrontational way to begin communicating that message.

I don't want my kids or grandkids - or your kids and grandkids - to grow up in a culture that has surrendered to filth. The only one we're supposed to surrender to is Christ.

So please purchase this CD. Once you've listened share it with your pastor. Share it with your friends. Share it with your church family and your small group. Share it with the people you know at work and throughout your community. Go on the offensive!

Dream big with us! What could God do through His people if every Church in America got on the same page for a prolonged offensive against pornography?

SOMEBODY'S DAUGHTER
Words & Music by John Mandeville & Steve Siler

The moment she was born
Her mommy and daddy cried
Taken by the wonder of life
From Barbie dolls to ballet shoes
From roller skates to lipstick and rouge
She's become a lady overnight
Why do I see only flesh and look right past her heart
I try to tell myself I can't help what I feel - then I remember

She's somebody's daughter
Somebody's child
Somebody's pride and joy
Somebody loves her for who she is inside
She has a mother and father
She's somebody's daughter

You knit her together
Your cherished creation
Made her body a temple for the soul
Why can't I appreciate
The beauty that your hands have made
And maintain my self control
'Cause when I see only flesh you're looking at her heart
There is so much more to her than meets the eye - I need to remember

CHORUS

Heaven's own precious child
A person full of worth and dignity
When her beauty is defiled
I demean us both and fail to see

She's somebody's daughter
Somebody's child
Somebody's pride and joy
Somebody loves her for who she is inside
She has a mother and father
She's somebody's daughter
She has a heavenly father
She's somebody's daughter

INTO THE LIGHT
Words & Music by Steve Siler & John Mandeville

The walls are crashing down
My illusion has been shattered
Those thoughts that held me captive in my skin
I've let the secrets out
I've felt the demons scatter
Maybe now the healing can begin

In to the light
Into the place where nothing's hidden
Into the light
Into the hope that I'm forgiven
Climbing from the shadows toward the way that leads to life
Out of the shame
Out of the chains
Into the light

There's going to be a cost
Habits that need breaking
I know the path I'm on will change my life
Oh God, I need you so much
Without you I won't make it
Lord, take the veil of darkness from my eyes

CHORUS

The unrelenting guilt that I've belonged to
Is finally letting go from deep within
Through the brokenness and tears
I've found its love I've feared
Yet love can take my heart from where it's been

CHORUS
