"I think the CD is marvelous. When I first heard the song it made me realize that somebody really knows what I am going through. I don't feel alone anymore."
- Police Officer, Virginia
During the Fall of 2002 Dr. Beverly Anderson, Clinical Director and Administrator of the Metropolitan Police Employee Assistance Program in Washington, DC, a confidential counseling program for officers and their families, contacted Joyce Boaz, Director of Gift From Within (GFW) about producing a much needed series of educational videotapes for building resiliency in America's law enforcement officers.
Gift From Within is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), those at risk for PTSD, and those who care for traumatized individuals. Dr. Anderson is on GFW's Professional Advisory Board and has contributed articles on police trauma syndrome for the law enforcement community. These articles are on the GFW website. www.giftfromwithin.org
While working together Dr. Anderson and Boaz decided they wanted a theme song for the series that would honor the service and sacrifice of police officers.
Boaz contacted Music for the Soul about creating a special theme song honoring police. After pouring over several case studies, Music for the Soul founder Steve Siler wrote the song Heroes Unsung. A short time later the song was selected to be sung live at the May 2003 National Peace Officers' Memorial Service at the US capitol in Washington DC. The performance followed President Bush on the program.
It was decided that a CD should be created both to encourage and give support to police officers who selflessly serve our communities every day of the year and also to honor those officers and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Heroes Unsung CD includes the song, poetry written and spoken by officers from around the country, an affirmation, and instrumental music. The liner notes include an article by Dr. Anderson.
Music for the Soul gives 10% for sales of Heroes Unsung to police support organizations.
"On February 22, 2003, I was honored with a surprise celebration acknowledging my 35 years of service to the Newtown Township Police Department. It was at that celebration, with my family, friends and coworkers present, that I was further honored by Gift From Within and Music For The Soul.
As part of the Invocation, our Chaplain had gained permission for the first public use of the beautiful song "Heroes Unsung." As I looked around the room, I could see the emotions on the faces of everyone, especially my fellow officers. I will never forget that privilege and I am touched and grateful to Gift From Within and Music For The Soul for allowing me to have such a wonderful tribute."
May God bless us all, stay safe.

HEROES UNSUNG
Words & Music by Steve Siler
Without a thought for yourselves
You race into the fires of hell
Unselfishly you sacrifice
and give your all to save a life
Anonymity's a pale reward
for all the things you've done
Heroes Unsung
You've seen the worst the world can give
You hold inside what you can't forget
The armor grows to block the pain
It's just so hard to communicate
And you never thought that you'd burn out
But sometimes you feel numb
Heroes Unsung
With uncommon acts of bravery
You rush into harm's way
Giving something to the rest of us
There is no way to repay
Have we taken you for granted
Without counting up the cost
'cause every time we lose even one of you
The best of us is lost
You're a human being with hopes and dreams
You've got a name and a family
If we never stopped to tell you thanks
That day has finally come
Heroes Unsung
You'll be honored for eternity
When all of heaven's stars are strung
Heroes Unsung
